Actually, I use lxde (light-weight X desktop environment).  It uses 
about 1/2 the memory of either Gnome or KDE.  It's kind of Windows 
98-ish, in that it doesn't have all kinds of stupid stuff on the 
desktop.  I don't know how to install it on Fedora, etc., but on 
OpenSuse, when asked whether I want to install KDE or Gnome, I select 
"Other", and then can choose lxde, xfce, and whatever.
