Are you sure you typed "uniq" and not "unique"?
Could you possibly have "uniq" aliased to "unique"?
What do you get when you run "type uniq"?
How about "dpkg -S /usr/bin/uniq"?

The uniq command is in the "coreutils" package on my Ubuntu Maverick machine, 
btw.
