But of course, we are both wondering how/why trying to use uniq 
leads to a complaint about missing "unique".

Please show us the output of the following commands: 

   ls /bin /usr/bin | sort | uniq | head
   history | grep 'sort.*uniq'
   alias | grep uniq
   echo $PATH
   ps
