I am no longer at the installation stage. CentOS has been installed
for quite a while now, so why can't it run the video at a higher
resolution now?

Logged in as root:
System ->Administration->Display->Settings-> Resolution, the dropdown displays:
640 X 480
800 X 600
1024 X 768
...
....
2048 X 1536
I can select different settings, follow instructions, reboot, but the
display always comes up 800 X 600
