Yes... But these enterprise customers have a lot on the line, and if a
given vendor fouls up the works badly enough, they'll find themselves
re-competing in an RFP situation in a short while.  So while these
vendors seem to "stick it to" these enterprise customers, it's because
they are also delivering quite a lot more than your average Walmart
buying experience. They are covering their costs in managing the
account, taking the decision makers out to lunch, paying that back
office team to turn orders around quickly, and so on.

I think it's ridiculous that (for example) to but Platespin Migrate,
you also buy a year of maintenance. Even though you use it once and
you're done, and it either works or doesn't. After you complete the
migration, there is no need to call support. And if you're buying 20
of them, you still have to buy the maintenance on all 20... Even
though you could say that you'll likely only ever need to call one out
of 10
times...

Gouging? Yes. But justified? Also yes. You're buying that throat to choke.
