I am attempting to check new hdd for bad sectors before install. I
have new hdd installed on my laptop. Laptop is booted to knoppix 5.1.1
live disk.

(None of my other computers are smart capable)

(I just noticed the time is way off on things I did on Knoppix)

root at Knoppix:/ramdisk/home/knoppix# smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
Device: ATA ST9750420AS Version: 0001
Serial number: 6WS2VNV8
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Mon Feb 4 01:53:45 2013 EST
Device does not support SMART
Error Counter logging not supported

[GLTSD (Global Logging Target Save Disable) set. Enable Save with '-S on']
Device does not support Self Test logging
root at Knoppix:/ramdisk/home/knoppix#

Notice "Device does not support SMART" What device? My laptop supports
smart.The new drive?
The last one which was identical did.

I removed the new hdd, and installed one that has Ubuntu 10.04
installed. I have run smartctl on it on this laptop.

root at Knoppix:/ramdisk/home/knoppix# smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: ATA FUJITSU MHY2120B Version: 0085
Serial number: K430T832NAD0
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Mon Feb 4 03:42:36 2013 EST
Device does not support SMART

Error Counter logging not supported

[GLTSD (Global Logging Target Save Disable) set. Enable Save with '-S on']
Device does not support Self Test logging
root at Knoppix:/ramdisk/home/knoppix#

I am again getting "Device does not support SMART"

I shutdown, removed Knoppix live disk and booted to hdd with Ubuntu
10.04, I then ran smartctl:

root at 1520:/home/tom# smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.38 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen

root at 1520:/home/tom#

I am only getting "Device does not support SMART" when running
smartctl from Knoppix.

I did notice "Error Counter logging not supported" on the 2 Knoppix
attempts. I am guessing that means the live disk does not do error
logging, and that is why smartctl is not working when I use Knoppix.

I am thinking just install new OS on the new drive and then run
smartctl before I do anything else with the new install.
