A generic SD card has a peak transfer rate rating (called a 
'Class') of 10 MBytes / sec.  Lesser speeds exist.  This will 
change over time as new specifications, but as the transfer is 
over a physical layer called SPI, there are upper limits

All the SSD's in current production are SATA based, which 
standard set greatly exceeds those rates.  Models vary by 
device of course, but functionally one can count on gaining 
some caching capacity gain, and speed gain at least for bursty 
loads
