[colug-432] moving around with your cable modem

Has anyone ever tried taking their cable modem somewhere else, i.e. across town, and plugging it in? Just bought a house, and am going to be traveling back and forth between my apartment and house (~30m drive) for about a month until my lease is up. Even though work doesn't pay for it, Internet access at home is required for my job because I'm on call 24/7/365.
I have t/w in my apartment, and assuming that t/w has lines to the house, would it be feasible to just carry my cable modem back and forth? Would it even work, or is the modem somehow tied to a local DSLAM? Kind of afraid that if I call T/W and ask them, they're going to want to a) make me sign a 1 year contract for service at the house and/or b) make me pay for service at both places.
Google Fiber installations are supposed to start in the area on the 29th, but that's pretty vague - hearing that it could be a couple of months before they get to my house.
thanks!
