I've used Exim + Courier-IMAP a lot on the back end and even integrated it
via LDAP to active directory.

The front-end probably matters a lot more than the back end if you are
looking for features. I usually use Horde Groupware for that as it includes
Calendars, Mail, Tasks, address book, etc.
