Will wodim burn a DVD, or is it just for CD? Seems like I have seen 
wodim mentioned when I run K3b to copy and burn a DVD.

I used instructions at 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CdDvd/Burning#Burning_a_CD_on_the_Command_Line_with_wodim

I was able to use growisofs -Z /dev/dvdrw -R -J /some/files shown at the 
bottom of that page.
