yup.  I created a fresh userid, to confirm that it had 
a fresh population of the wanted icons

I actually just mv'd to one side various config ~/.WHATEVER/ 
directories, and regained my icons

I dont use gdm, etc but rather startx because I am a dinosaur 
(or something)

but also that permits easy stopping of an X session and 
reststarting it, to test, wihtout needing to type credentials 
over and over
