I've looked into getting my own and found TimeWarner's recommend cable modem list:

http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/residential-home/support/topics/internet/buy-your-modem.html

The main thing that has kept me from getting my own modem, as others have expressed here, is that when problems occur (which they surprisingly do) TWC can't push the blame off to me and tell me I'm SOL.

Also, the problems I often experience with TWC are disconnects that last for a split second and they occur at random times throughout the day every 2 to 5 days. It isn't that the Internet goes out for long, it is only a few seconds, it is the lost of all my connections. (I run various SSH proxies to different hosts for different reasons, and these sit in the background). Often these get disconnected and are not re-established. That is what makes it annoying. What I have noticed is that when this happens is that my cable modem lights appear to act like it was just restarted. My IP address doesn't change though. Oh well.
