Thought this was an interesting price and speed comparison with other
countries. This came from Huffington Post's Tech Page
Pricing tiers in the U.S. seem to support Reardon's argument. Comcast, the
nation's largest cable provider, claims it's
capable<http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57589353-93/is-cable-holding-back-superfast-broadband-adoption-on-purpose/>
of
providing 3Gbps broadband -- but its fastest service currently on the
market is $320 a month for 305Mbps. Verizon, meanwhile, has just announced
its fastest FiOS
ever<http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/07/new-fios-top-speed-is-half-that-of-google-fiber-and-4x-the-price/>,
500Mbps for $310 a month.
Compare that to Hong
Kong<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/13/susan-crawford-internet_n_2670127.html>,
where consumers can get 500Mbps for $25 a month, or Seoul, where the same
speed is priced at $30 a month. Only Google Fiber's broadband plan seems
competitive with those of other tech-savvy nations: It offers 1Gbps for $70
a month, which is only outpaced by Japan's proposed Nuro
network<http://fareastgizmos.com/computing/sony-launches-worlds-fastest-internet-connection-for-home-use-in-japan.php>
with
speeds of up to 2Gbps for $51 a month.
