Some of the discussion (in the StackOverflow thread Jeff mentioned) ...
wow, I can relate.

For the past four years and several months, my life was all about
assembler. It's fun! (not sarcastic, it really is if you have a good
macro set) But not all hand-built assembler code is re-entrant,
re-usable, re-locatable. It helps when all on the team agree to certain
standards and linkage convention. (Not complaining, no ... not me! Okay,
this part is sarcastic.)
