When I started playing around in IRC I found these basic commands helped
me out: http://www.ircbeginner.com/ircinfo/ircc-commands.html
(Anything else IRC command wise I just picked up as I went.)
Also on a side note. XChat is fine, but has not really had any news
around it since about mid 2010. You may want to try its successor
Hexchat! (https://hexchat.github.io)
