I think Apple Remote Desktop is a superset of VNC (see
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/42242/what-is-the-difference-between-apple-remote-desktop-remote-management-remote
). I use the "Screen Sharing" MacOS app (which is a glorified VNC viewer
-- most recently located in /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications) as a
client and the built-in VNC server. I can connect (by ssh tunneling) to
Linux boxes running vncserver with no issue.
OS X has sed et al, but they can be a little bit different mostly around

Because they follow an actual Unix (albeit BSD as opposed to SVR4)
reference, vs. the GNU "let's throw everything in, compatibility be damned,
--typeTilYouDropObscureOptionsWithDoubleDashedParametersLongerThanYourArm
interfaces" ;-)
