[colug-432] trashed grub2?

I have a KDE Neon box that I use when I need x86 Linux, with Windows
installed on a separate disk for the occasional game or two. Don't use
the box often, mostly to build Linux packer images but it's more or less
nice to have the desktop available FWIW.
Attached an external nvme usb3 disk, and installed Zorin 17 onto that
disk because I wanted to play with Zorin, see what it was like. All good
- boot menu shows Zorin, Neon, Windows.
However when booting the system without that that external drive
attached, instead of a boot menu, I get a grub prompt - "grub>".
I can boot into Neon by doing
set root=(hd1,gpt2)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-6.8.etc root=/dev/nvme0n1p2
initrd /boot/initrd.img-6.8.etc
While "update-grub; grub-install /dev/nvme0n1" doesn't throw errors, it
isn't fixing grub to get the menu back.
If I lose this box, it's not the end of the world. I'd like to fix it
mostly because I'm annoyed and because I'm sure it's possible. This
isn't Windows, after all.
Any suggestions?
