I have been struggling, both desperately and unsuccessfully, to install
Mint on a relatively new Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro. I have installed a new mSata
ssd into the laptop. I have partitioned it correctly. Windows 8.1 is
working perfeclty from one of the partitions. A new fresh version of Mint
is installed in the other partition. However I cannot get it to boot into
Mint.

I believe that I am very close to having the project done....yet I still
cannot get the machine to boot into the Linux OS. Need GRUB bootloader,
need to disable something? Arggghhhh.

A little background here. I am a novice nooby struggling to learn while I
am doing it. I am enjoying the trip but it has now gotten to the point of
frustration and the fun factor is rapidly diminishing. Particularly since
I am not able to use the Lenovo Yoga and/or learn more about Mint.

I am a Mac OS user and have been since .... well the beginning back in
'84. I am also fairly competent, at least to some degree, with Android.
I am not very fluent in Windows at all. The goal is to keep 8.1 on the
Yoga jsut in case I need it for something down the road (or to migrate to
Windows 10 or whatever). I would like to become proficient enough in
Ubuntu/Mint to wean myself off of OS X.

I installed Mint (and Ubuntu) on an Asus laptop about two months ago and
sampled each. Decided I liked Mint. But it was the sole OS on the
machine....no Windows. So booting into another OS was not part of the
equation. And that apparently made things a helluva lot easier during the
install.

As I mentioned I think (almost absolutely positive) that I have Mint
correctly installed. It is there. But the problem lies in the boot. I
think I have done most of the hard (ie labor intensive if I can even use
that term) work already. And what remains to be done should be (fingers
crossed) pretty simple.

Any suggestions? Recommendations. Anyone willing to meet me at a
coffeehouse, restaurant etc to help nail this down? I would be more than
wiling to buy coffee, a sandwich, a Lamborghini Aventador....only kidding
on the Lambo.

TIA
colug.net often says something like:
As always, feel free to bring with you any ailing or
I have heard that there's an informal gathering of software
types who appear at Stauf's Coffee Roasters 1277 Grandview
Avenue early (6am? 7am?) on Thursday mornings. Look for geeks
with laptops? Other software types might hang out there often
between 8am and 9am.

Linux types are amongst those who show up at the Python dojos.
See cohpy.org.
I do not know the solution to your problem. I wonder if
secure boot is involved. Search the web for various
combinations of linux, secure, boot, windows, and matthew garrett.
I've only read about setting up Linux on these newfangled UEFI
machines, but the first thing to try would be to configure the BIOS
(or whatever they call it now) to disable Secure Boot.

If you still can't get it to work after that, maybe switch it to
Legacy Mode, though I'm not sure how Windows will like that.
You didn't mention what error messages you get, or what happens when
you try to boot Linux.

By the way, the best thing I've found about running Linux on the Yoga
2 Pro is about Arch Linux, but still might be useful:
http://keithcu.com/wordpress/?p=3270

I've been eyeing the Yoga 2 Pro for a while (and was really
disappointed that Lenovo mangled the keyboard on its successor), so
I'm hoping you can get things working.
This was likely true at one time, but I've personally successfully
installed the most recent versions of Linux Mint[1], Ubuntu[2], and
Fedora[3] with Secure Boot enabled. This is on a Lenovo t440s which is a
cousin of the Yoga 2 Pro.

So that likely isn't the problem. Whether or not Secure Boot is necessary,
required, or preferred is a different question.
Those solutions involve making sure you're using Microsoft-signed code
to boot Linux. That's something that can easily go wrong, and we know
that *something* is going wrong in the boot. Secure Boot may not be
the culprit (we have no error messages), but it's a likely one, and
it's an easy thing to try.
I would suggest checking the legacy option as well. I have run into some
issues with M2 ssds especially pci-e variety lately.

The only issue with this though is 8 IS booting.
