I got my RHCE some years ago (about the time RHEL 5 came out) because
the government required it for the job I had. Personally, I have not
had any use for it since then. I imagine that with some large companies
(particularly where your résumé has to get past layers of HR) that
having the certifications helps establish a minimum level of competence.
Of course, that varies widely depending on the certification. I've met
plenty of people with MSCE, CCNA, and even RHCE who were only marginally
competent.

I'll tell you what I tell my students: a high GPA won't get you the job,
but it will keep you from having to defend/overcome poor academic
performance in the interview (assuming you get the interview in the
first place).

The same holds for certifications. You don't have to spend time
defending yourself for not getting some certifications. Instead, you
can spend time on the qualities that make you valuable to the
prospective employer. Given that most job interviews are rather
time-limited you need to do everything you can to maximize your use of
the time. Spend 5 mintues explaining why you don't think certifications
are worth your time or spend 5 minutes telling them how your last
project increased the sales team's productivity by X% and increased the
division's revenue by Y% and how you mentored two new interns in the
process.

-Roberto
