Jeong Kim, President of Bell Labs, will host a celebration to honor the
legacy of Dennis Ritchie on Friday morning, September 7, 2012, in Murray

The event begins in the Arnold Auditorium at 9:30 a.m. EST, and will

UNIX® team as well as members of the Ritchie family, who will share their

The agenda will include some of the leading thinkers in the fields of
information, communications and computing technology, including:****

**·         ***Al Aho*, original member of the Bell Labs Computer Systems
Lab where UNIX® and the C programming language were invented. He
co-authored the AWK programming language and is currently Professor of
Computer Science, Columbia University ****

**·         ***Brian Kernighan*, original member of the Computer Systems
Lab who co-authored the C programming language book with Ritchie; he is
currently Professor of Computer Science, Princeton University ****

**·         ***Doug McIlroy*, who led the Computer Systems Lab, and is
currently Professor of Computer Science, Dartmouth College ****

**·         ***David Patterson*, Professor of Computer Science, U.C.
Berkeley, where he led the design and implementation of RISC I (Reduced
Instruction Set Computer) ****

**·         ***Eric Schmidt,* Executive Chairman, Google, Inc. Schmidt
co-authored the lex analysis software program for UNIX® ****

Master of Ceremonies is *Susanne Arney*, head of Bell Labs North
America.  *Steve
Fortun*e, Technical Manager, Bell Labs Enabling Computing Technologies
domain, will present a talk on Bell Labs Research today.****

*About Dennis Ritchie*****

Dennis Ritchie, co-inventor of the UNIX® operating system and inventor of
the C programming language, joined the Bell Labs Computer Systems Research
department in 1967, and though he retired in 2007 from the Computer Science
Research Center, he continued to maintain close ties as a consultant for
Bell Labs. ****

He received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including the ACM
award for the outstanding paper of 1974 in systems and languages; IEEE
Piore, Hamming and Pioneer medals, Bell Laboratories Fellow; Association
for Computing Machinery Turing Award (1983); ACM Software Systems Award
(1983); C&C Foundation award of NEC (1989); the US Medal of Technology
(1999); the U Penn Harold Pender Award (1993); and the Japan Prize (2011).
He also was elected to the U. S. National Academy of Engineering in 1988.***

All of these honors were shared with Ken Thompson, co-inventor of UNIX® and
long-time friend.****

Dennis passed away in October 2011 at the age of 70.****
