Thanks for your reply.

I tired commenting out .kde and kde4 as per your suggestion.  i got the 
same resuls, a login screen that did not give me any drop down choices.

What I want to do is change the login screen via Personal Settings/Login 
Screen, but wnen I click on Apply I get an error/:/

     Unable to authenticate the action.

If I log on as Root I no longer have a menu item for Personal Settings.
