I don't recall if we've talked about dd-wrt or OpenWRT here. Have we? Or
the new one (to me), CeroWRT? We did have subject line "DD-WRT" some 18
months ago, but the thread was more about monitoring than about
router/firewall firmware alternatives.
Some back story: I've been following a number of stories about IoT
(Internet of Things) and embedded systems. I'm also serious about IPv6
connectivity (with or wthout help from my ISP).
The tipping point is due to a combination of me needing to simplify (too
many physical boxes) yet increase reliability of the home network. We
took a power hit last week. The Linux box sitting on the cablemodem
(dual NICs) would have been fine (on UPS) but had its own issue which I
had not noticed before the blip. Other machines which did not recover
are too important to the whole but yet the box with the power is old and
underpowered and back-leveled.
So ... methinks a good router with one of the community replacement op
sys might be in order: integrated solution ("fit for purpose" hardware)
yet more up-to-date and vetted software. Oh, and I can control it on my
terms (eg: SSH but not only SSH).
Y'all know about DD-WRT and OpenWRT. Then there's the bufferbloat
problem. I happened to catch a Jim Gettys video the other day, so hit
his blog and other pages, and there saw mention of CeroWRT. Looks
interesting.
Thoughts? Stories?
