Beware that TWC/RR has a list of "supported" modems.  I vaguely recall that
the speculation is that if you don't use one of them, you may miss out on
some of the "free" performance improvements that they toss out every now
and again (I know at least one person has seen evidence that TWC does some
sort of remote updating on the modem firmware -- even if it's your modem).

The going price (new egg) for a [new] modem on the list was about a year's
rental fees.  I ended up buying one, only to have a lightning strike take
it out -- now I'm on the two year amortization plan...
