This is the answer I got back:

> They get very slow below -20C, but the backlight helps to warm it up within 5 minutes or so.  The ones we used to use were rated to -40C (Sharp).  The ones we use now are rated to -30C (Hitachi).  We were told the cells that hold the liquid crystal would rupture if frozen below rating.  I took some to -50C and there was no sign of damage.
