Also, I have been pleased with the Time Warner smart phone 
based application to show, and to offer to take a request for, 
publicly available 'hot-spots'.  It looks like it is 
certificate based or keyed off of some other cached 
credential.  One enters a credential once, some background 
transaction happens, and thereafter one is not prompted for 
credentials again.  [the annoying 'ping' sound effect it is 
set to make by default may be disabled in the settings menu]
