I don't need the video output. I ordered one of these a little bit ago:

so we'll have to see how it goes.
I don't really want to buy/use a display, because it means a (relatively)
huge piece of gear. Everything else so far is mounted neatly on a 2'x2'
board, with room to spare. Your suggested product might be a little bit
better because it doesn't look like requires power. I'm not sure if mine
requires power just to use the 3.5mm or not.
I managed to get omxplayer into a thread so that at least it doesn't block,
but I can't figure out to stop the playback ("how to stop a thread in
python" search results vary wildly and are incredibly confusing). Hopefully
this little device will let me use the HDMI audio and avoid having to
launch omxplayer from within python.
