Usually there is a way to turn off the internal NAT/DHCP/etc and force the device to basically act as just a standard modem. Yes, double-NAT, while it can be done and there are a few rare cases for it (so few I can't think of any right off), mostly just causes all kinds of headaches.
You might have to poke around the interwebs to figure out how to access the management interface, but on most of those things I've seen which are modem+ devices, they are configurable from our side of the wire.
